30 Day Shred by Jillian Michaels

Last week I was a couch potato. I spent maybe 10 minutes a day total “working out”, meaning running after kids, going up the stairs to the second floor of my home, etc. Not really a workout, but at least a smidge of movement.

Then the snow melted. I spent 1/2 hour raking the leaves up from my front lawn. Let me tell you, I thought I was going to die. Now, I’m 5’4″ and 135 pounds. A bit overweight, but not enough that I ever worried about it. I thought I was fine. I was healthy enough. WRONG! There is nothing, anywhere, that says you should feel almost dead from raking leaves for 30 minutes! I am so out of shape it is pathetic!

I’ve reached my aha moment. It’s on. I decided I wasn’t  going to ease into it. If I’m doing this getting into shape thing, I’m going all out. The first thing I decided to do? 3o Day Shred by Jillian Michaels. Let me tell you. If you want to get your butt kicked, this is a great way to do it! I’ve done it for 5 days now, and it still makes me cry and whine and yell during it.

It’s a short video. Only 27 minutes. But they are the longest 27 minutes of my life. Every. Single. Morning. She starts out with a brief warm up, then gets right to work. She follows a 3/2/1 pattern. 3 minutes of strength (read: push ups, weight lifting, lunges, etc) 2 minutes of cardio (jumping jacks, jump rope, etc) 1 minute abs (LOTS of crunches!). After 3 simple rounds you are done for the day!

This is not a video to do if you want an “easy” workout. There are very little modifications to make it easier for you. Think jumping jacks are too hard? Tough. Deal with it and do it anyway. Can’t do a push up? Think again. You are given no resting time during the 27 minutes. Not even to sip a water. She says it often throughout the video, if you want results there is no time for resting.

The only things needed for the workout are a mat and weights. I started out with 3 lb weights. I used them the first 4 days, and today I used 5 pound weights.

This workout is HARD. On day two I could barely walk, I had to crawl up the stairs. BUT I pushed through and did the video anyway, and you know what? It made me feel SO much better.

    I have been doing the 30 day shred, with Jillian for over a year now, all I can say is please start doing this a young as possible. I am 57yrs old and I can do it most day without to much trouble. The problem I am having is in over a year I’ve only lost 7 lbs. boy they sure don’t come off and easily as when I was younger. Now that it is spring and I have start walking because if you do the same excersie for to long it gets boring. I love working out with Jillian, but start as soon as you can, it gets harder with age to lose the inches:)

    • Sandy- I know what you mean! When I was in high school I used to run two miles every day. Now I think I would die! haha! Besides Jillian, do you have any other videos you recommend? I’ve been doing the Couch to 5K program too, and so far love it! :)
